Welfare Reform Bill / Welfare Reform Act
New Deal Scandal and Flexible New Deal Scandal fully condemns the Welfare Reform Bill and is in solidarity with the hundreds of organisations, unions and individuals also opposing this proposed legislation.
The Jobseekers Act 1995 has already been amended over 50 times and the poor treatment and abuse of the conditions imposed on Jobseekers are unfair and the majority are unlawful.
The Flexible New Deal will be a “work for your benefit” scheme: a violation of numerous articles of European Human Rights. Even though knowing of this, James Purnell declared that the Welfare Reform Bill was compatible with these Human Rights. They are not.
Like the fraud issues and failure of the previous New Deal scheme (which the Flexible New Deal replaces) billions of taxpayers’ money will continue to be wasted in private organisations delivering these courses without much restriction on what the courses can contain.
Flexible New Deal, the renamed New Deal scheme (a failure) is supposed to allow providers to be more "flexible" although the VSO/IAP (13 week compulsory New Deal) schemes only required New Deal Prime Contractors to undertake a "minimum" of one day of supported job search a week. They weren't even obligated to offer work placements as advertised to jobseekers at Jobcentre Plus.
The Welfare Reform Bill has received Royal Assent. It is now Welfare Reform Act 2009.
